Sociology Internship ~ SOC 495

COURSE CONTENT: This course is a supervised work experience related to course work in sociology in appropriate government, social service, and private organizations. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 sem. hrs. Permission of the chairperson is required. Grade option 2. This course does not fulfill cluster or general education requirements.

The Internship Program is designed to allow students to receive academic credit for work experience. This work may be done in any of a variety of agencies or organizations. The internship experience should serve as a transition between the world of the classroom and the world of work. The internship will give students an opportunity to relate their academic study to work situations and will provide more information on which to base a career choice. Students may obtain between one and six credits for the internship.

All internship programs must satisfy the requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences Policy Statement on Internships as described in the University Bulletin.

 

Community Field Experience in Social Work ~ SWK 401

COURSE CONTENT: (1) Supervised field experience with individuals and/or families in an agency setting; (2) Students spend 200 hours in the agency field assignment; (3) Concurrent seminar focuses on basic social work knowledge, values, skills, application to graduate school (MSW), and guides to entry-level employment in human services. Course is worth 5 sem. hours. Permission is required. Service learning required. This course does not fulfill cluster and/or general education requirements.

The Social Work Internship is designed for students interested in graduate school, and for students who desire future employment in the social services field. Both clinical and administrative placements are possible. Students earn 5 credits for this internship, spending 10 hours per week in the agency and meeting weekly in a seminar. Students should take SWK 201 Introduction to Social Work Practice, prior to enrolling in the internship course. The internship is offered in the Fall Semester.
