About St. Joe's

HOME

The department has a teaching-learning focus on the local community. Students are encouraged to use the local community as a site for examining various issues, problems and concepts studied in class. Many students are involved in service-learning projects in the local community. These projects allow students to gain a better understanding of many of the social problems in urban areas. Other students conduct research projects in the local community as part of their assignments for various courses. Finally, many juniors and seniors are placed in local agencies and organizations for internships that provide firsthand experiences that are useful in career selection and preparation for graduate studies.

Faculty are also involved in studying aspects of the community and helping to improve the quality of life in the local community. Faculty volunteer their time and use their expertise on many projects, committees and task forces in the community. Several faculty have done research for local community groups to assist their efforts to address various problems. Frequently, students participate with faculty in these research projects and gain valuable experience, skills and insights.
