DR. MARY JO HUTH HONORED WITH ANNUAL LECTURE

The Catholic Academy of Sciences in the United States has announced the first annual Mary Jo Huth, Ph.D. Memorial Lecture, to be held in the fall of 2004. Lectures will be held at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. The first lecture will be given in the Plenary Session of the October 16, 2004 annual meeting. The guest speaker will be the Most Reverend Marcelo Sa'nchez Sorondo, Episcopal Chancellor, Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Vatican City State. This will be the first time that an official of His Holiness' Academy of Sciences has been a speaker in the United States.

News of this lecture came to the department from William E. Huth, Mary Jo's brother. In his letter he says that this lecture "is a tribute not only to Mary Jo, but to your department and the University. I am sure that Mary Jo's affiliation with the University will be displayed prominently to those attending this lecture. Membership of the American branch of the Academy makes a quite impressive list of Catholic professionals of many disciplines."

Berry Students Journey to Mexico

Sr. Laura Leming, FMI and Dean Lovelace accompanied 10 students from the Berry Scholars Sophomore social science seminars to BorderLinks during spring break 2004. This border immersion experience was included as an extension of the "Going Beyond Our Borders" theme of the seminars. The group stayed at Borderlinks facilities on both sides of the border as well as with families in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico and at a community Center for Migrants in Altar, Sonora. The trip included a maquila visit and meetings with community organizers in both Tucson and Sonora as well as a visit to the Border Patrol. The group’s last day in Arizona was spent visiting various research centers and museums at the University of Arizona.

BorderLinks is a not-for-profit organization that conducts experiential travel seminars focusing on the issues of Mexican border communities. People from the north and south come together to explore global issues in the stark reality of the border environment. These trips provide a firsthand experience of life on the border, with all its complexities. Primary activities are meetings, conversations, and experiences with persons holding differing perspectives and viewpoints on the wide variety of social, economic, faith and political issues at play in the border region. This is an opportunity for students to go beyond the classroom walls where they can learn about the issues, culture, economics, and lives of people along the US-Mexican border.

U.D. Honors Program senior and Sociology major, Mary Fischer, a Washington, DC area resident, recently returned from her second summer study abroad program in Morocco, where she conducted interviews and shot footage for an upcoming documentary film on the Women's Rights Movement in Morocco.
