Steve Scanlan, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Sociology, University of Memphis

Steve is a 1993 graduate of the UD Honors Program. After receiving his BA in Sociology, he earned his doctorate at The Ohio State University in 2000. At UM, Steve teaches courses on environmental sociology, globalization, social movements and social change, social stratification, and the sociology of international development. His research interests are comparative social change, international development, political sociology and social stratification/inequality. He has published articles examining hunger and food security in less industrialized societies. Current research includes AIDS and security in less industrialized societies, the gender determinants of food security, hunger strikes as social movement, the origins of international forced migration, and Appalachian poverty. Steve spoke on campus in the Fall of 2002 for Hunger Awareness Week.

Marie McCabe

Marie received her BA in Sociology from the University of Dayton in Spring 2002. She is currently in graduate school at the University of Cincinnati studying Clinical Psychology. Marie thoroughly enjoys the program at UC and notes that it keeps her busy.

Mary Fischer

Mary received her BA in Sociology from the University of Dayton in December 2002. She recently premiered her documentary film, "Walking With One Leg," which explores the plight of women in Morocco. Mary went to the country of Morocco twice while a student at UD. The first trip was in the spring of 2001 and she returned for a second study abroad in 2002. The second time, she describes herself as a "one-woman videotaping machine," as she traipsed "all over Morocco," gathering film clips for the project on women's rights which was funded by the Honors and Scholars Department and through a Learn, Lead, and Serve grant. After hours of scripting and editing, the documentary was proudly shown at the New Neon Movies in downtown Dayton and a second showing was given in the Learning Teaching Center.

Mary currently works as an intern at Think TV in Dayton. Her plans for the future include returning to her hometown in the Washington D.C. area and she is looking at positions in environmental NGOs, public television and with National Geographic. She has described her experiences at UD as "surprising" in that she never dreamed of the opportunities she would have with independent studies, study abroad and the use of her professors as valuable resources. She sees these as just some of the benefits of attending a close-knit, medium-sized university such as UD.

Meagan Lyon

Meagan received her BA in Sociology from the University of Dayton in December 2002. She has been most recently involved in organizing the upcoming (Friday, Feb. 21) benefit dinner for Darna, a home for street children in Tangier, Morocco. She visited Morocco while on a Learn, Lead, and Serve grant to study child welfare in that country. Much of her time there coincided with the efforts of Mary Fischer. Meagan describes Darna as "a powerful and progressive model of social service." The haven for homeless boys was founded by Mounira El Alami, who is featured prominently in the film "Walking With One Leg," a documentary by Mary Fischer. Meagan's goal is to give support and raise awareness about Darna. For more information about the upcoming benefit event, go to: http://honors.udayton.edu/current_news/darna_benefit_dinner.htm
