The Dr. Mary Jo Huth Scholarship Award was established by Mr. and Mrs. William E. Huth to honor Dr. Mary Jo Huth for her dedication and commitment to the University of Dayton. Dr. Huth is Professor Emerita in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work at the University of Dayton. The scholarship award will go to a full-time Sociology major, who has demonstrated outstanding performance in all areas of academic excellence, selected by the Department faculty. The Dr. Stanley L. Saxton, Jr. Scholarship Fund was established by the Saxton family to memorialize Dr. Saxton’s dedication and service to the University of Dayton for 22 years. The award will go to a full-time Sociology major with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or above. The criteria for selection are academic excellence, service to the University or community, participation in extra-curricular activities, and financial need. The Department faculty will consult with the Saxton family in selecting the award winner. To apply for either scholarship, a Sociology major should submit a current resume and a personal statement of approximately 500 words, which articulates how you developed your interest in Sociology and Anthropology or Social Work, what interests you about the major, and what you plan to do with your Sociology major after you graduate. Your statement should also explain why you are deserving of the scholarship award. The Department faculty will consider the quality of the statement, as well as the academic record of the students who apply for the scholarship. Submit your application materials to the Department by January 31st. The Department faculty will make their scholarship decisions by March 15th. Students will be notified that they are a scholarship recipient in early April. An announcement of the scholarship recipients will be made at the Department’s annual awards banquet.
