Course Characterization:
The focus of this course will be on the origin, history and influence
of mass communications in American society. This class will also provide
you with an awareness of the theoretical perspectives on the media, such
as theories of media influence, diffusion of innovations, theories of
the press, and theories of audience behavior - to name just a few.
Our study of the media will include the creative, critical, technological
and social dimensions of nearly all forms of mass communication. We will
explore the role of information and news in our society and we will debate
many of the issues related to this topic. When discussing television,
we will look closely at the various strategies used in programming network
television, we will explore the various methods of audience measurement,
and we will analyze the role and function of popular culture in America
as it relates to the mass media. |
