COLLABORATIVE WRITING PROJECT

CWP: DUE SUNDAY, JULY 20

[SUNDAY, JULY 13- LAST DAY TO CONTRIBUTE TO THREADED DISCUSSION]

TOPIC FOR SUMMER, 2014:

A CONCEPTUAL MAP FOR CREATING A "VALUE" ENVIRONMENT FOR PROVIDING SERVICE AND A NURTURING OF "SOULFUL WORK."

WHY THIS TOPIC.

When I read your first Threaded Discussion, I was struck by the care which was given to the foundations of values. For this reason, I have given you all access to the TD1 for both Groups 1 and 2 with the idea that you could benefit from reading what the other group had said. This access was given after TD 1 was completed. I always find that my students are  pointing to a very important project for this course. It has taken me a while to formulate this task. Now I think I can articulate what usually rattles around in my brain during the course. You all know how important it is to state the "Mission" of an organization. [Some of you may have read the "Mission" and "Identity" statements for UD when you were reading the material by Fr. Lackner.] Frequently, this "Mission" statement results in one or two or three sentences that are beautifully printed and framed so they can be hung on the wall of every office of the organization.

COLLABORATIVE WRITING PROJECT: ABOVE ALL, REMEMBER THAT THIS IS A TEAM EFFORT SO EVERYONE IS EXPECTED TO PARTICIPATE FULLY.

The task for this CWP is to put some "value flesh" on the "skeleton" of a "Mission" statement.  You have already done most of the discussion work in TD1. All you really have to do prior to the writing of this CWP is to review what is already there in TD1 and maybe develop some of the issues that have already been addressed. So your "Mission Task" is to describe the "Value Environment," and the importance/significance of the "Values" you have selected so that the "Workplace" will be an opportunity to "Nurture the Souls" of those working there as well as extending that "soulfulness" to those whom the company serves. Since this task for this course is performed in the context of Faith and Ethics, you might want to bring those elements into the description of the organization's mission. In a way, Fr. Lackner have given you a model to follow. He gives a "catalogue" of virtues and then he explains their significance and application to the community. Remember that "values" are the foundation for human life and "virtues" are the actions we perform to apply those basic "values."

Fortunately, Isidore [see directions for its use below] offers you the ideal tool to develop team analyses, reports and recommendations. I would like you to do some of your group work online so there is a written record of how your discussions and analyses are progressing. Students in my previous terms also met in the Collaborative Classroom, which is always running, to engage in discussion, particularly to determine the way your report is going to be written. Some students also told me that they used Google.docs for the same purpose and they seemed to find it easier than the Isidore Forums or the Isidore Classroom. Unfortunately, I am "technologically challenged" and have not done any work with Google.docs. I am going to try to learn how to use it before your assignment is due --- maybe some of you can help me in that regard.

To make the results of the deliberations of the three teams most effective, the analyses, presentations and recommendations should not be too long --- about 2500 words would be quite sufficient; no lengthy tome --- time is very valuable and there is not the time to read an excessively long treatise. You will notice that this project combines the features of a threaded discussion and the task of writing. The threaded discussion that leads up to the actual writing should contain a reasonable number of contributions from each member of the team. You have already done the major work of the this part of the CWP in your TD1.  These discussion contributions should have substantive VALUE content; and this will involve the significance of the values you have identified. There may be, in addition, some contributions about how you are going to go about writing the report. The merits of the report will be judged on the team discussion and the reflection of that discussion in the final report.

I do insist that the final report is posted on Isidore as an attachment in MS WORD. I ask for that process so that I can "colorize" it with my comments in the same way that I read your Essays.

The CWP is due by midnight on Sunday, July 20 with the last day for making contributions to the Threaded Discussion, which precedes the writing of the report, being July 13.

Teams 1, 2 and 3 will focus on the task as described above.
DYNAMICS OF COLLABORATIVE WRITING
1. All members of the team should engage in the discussion. There is no magic number for contributions to the discussion, but about 5 contributions per person would be a decent number to consider. All contributions to the discussion MUST be made by July 13 for the report. Decisions on how to compose the report should be made by early July. The Threaded Discussion should should end on July 13; this is necessary to give enough time for the final version to be produced by midnight of July 20.
2. The team will decide how it will go about generating a draft that will be put in the "Draft" folder.
3. The team will designate  who will refine the final version and put it in the "final version" folder. Place it in the folder as a WORD  document.
4. Notify the instructor when the final version is ready to be read.
